Ok, I finally got around to testing this.  It did indeed fix the segfault I 
was seeing on arm, and it doesn't seem to have caused regressions on i686.

Haven't managed to try it on a non-static link on armv4l yet though.  The 
application emulation of qemu doesn't work with library linking and I need to 
fiddle with ext2 packaging some more before using system emulation.
